Hey, 2nd Amendment Hardasses: IT’S A TV SHOW!

Daily Duh: January 31, 2022

A common–and accurate–complaint about leftists is that they say “equal opportunity” but they mean “equal outcome.” (This is why they’ve been slowly replacing the term “equal opportunity” with “equity.”)

Here at Stupid Politics, we don’t do that. We say “equal opportunity” and we mean “equal opportunity.”

So when a politician/celebrity/group/political party says or does something stupid, we don’t care if they’re liberal, conservative, libertarian, leftist, or sovereign citizens: We see stupid, we call out stupid.

See?

So everyone has an equal opportunity to win a Daily Duh–but that doesn’t mean there’s equity across all those categories. We don’t go to work, look at our recent posts, and say, “Hey; we need more Republicans making stupid gun control comments!”

That’s because 99.9 percent of the time, it’s safe to assume a stupid gun control comment is a leftist/progressive/liberal/Democrat.

Sorry, guys. If you don’t want to be the exclusive source of stupid gun control statements, stop making so many stupid gun control statements.

Today, however, we fearlessly call out some stupidity from the right wing side of the aisle:

Country music star Tim McGraw and his wife, Faith Hill, are co-stars in the miniseries 1883, a Western taking place in 1883. McGraw plays a tougher’n-old-beef-jerky cowboy protecting a wagon train headed west to Oregon. He shoots first and doesn’t ask questions later; he just reloads and shoots again. (His wife, Faith Hill, gets tanked on 1880s-style purple drank and passes out, but that’s another issue.)

My wife and I were watching the latest episode tonight and she remarked there’s been some noise about McGraw’s role. Something about people being upset that he’s shot quite a few people since the series started.

I Googled it and was surprised to see that the crit he’s getting is from the hard right. I was expecting to see hand-wringing editorials about McGraw committing so much gun violence and couldn’t we have the pioneers and bandits and Injuns build pillow forts instead of shooting each other?

Instead, I found loads of comments like this one, from one u/tagny_daggart on Reddit:

For anybody watching Yellowstone 1883, just remember that ol' Tim McGraw is a raging leftist who HATES the 2nd Amendment but is more than happy to sling a gun if it puts money in his pocket.

I Googled McGraw’s stance on gun control, and it boils down to this:

“Look, I’m a bird hunter — I love to wing-shoot. However, there is some common sense that’s necessary when it comes to gun control,” McGraw told Billboard in a 2017 interview.

I don’t agree with that, but I don’t think he’s “a raging leftist who HATES the 2nd Amendment.”

Now I’m a hard-core 2nd Amendment advocate. Not a Ruby Ridge/Branch Davidian “You broke into the wrong goddamn rec room!” kind of guy.

I’m, IMHO, a little bit more down to earth:

  1. I don’t brush my teeth with cordite.
  2. I don’t love the smell of napalm in the morning.
  3. I do have a CCW permit and I carry whenever I leave the house.
  4. I have a USCCA membership (and there’s no sponsorship here; I just like the idea of not going to jail if I ever have to responsibly exercise my right to self-defense, but a pissy ADA decides to make me a cautionary tale, so I highly recommend checking it out).
  5. I’m not one of those guys who take an AR-15 to the grocery store. I understand what they’re trying to do, but I don’t think that’s a good way to do it.
  6. I don’t have any bumper stickers or yard signs or T‑shirts that say Kill ‘Em All; Let God Sort ‘Em Out, or They Can Have My Gun When They Pry It From My Cold, Dead Hands, or This House Protected By Smith & Wesson, or When Guns Are Outlawed Only Outlaws Will Have Guns. The operative word in “concealed carry” is CONCEALED. I’d much rather avoid trouble than attract it, and I don’t have anything to prove.

Keeping those things in mind, I have two things to say to u/tagny_daggart:

1. IT’S A TV SHOW!

2.

‘Nuff said.
